We all wanted to go. A plane was upside down in a remote BC lake in an area known for hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation. The fall weather was glorious. Peter and Tom got chosen to do the rescue. Lucky guys!
They assembled the Sealand Aviation plane-upside-down-in -the-water kit, complete with boat, outboards and fishing rods, hitched up the trailer and headed out to the wide open spaces and the open road...
As soon as they arrived they started to set up. Day two they flipped the plane, but it wasn't floating. Their plan to get it running and fly it out wasn't feasible; the plane had been resting on some rocks which had punctured one wing and dented the other.
Day three they got the plane floating and ready to be towed to where it could be loaded onto the trailer.
Day 4 dawned with a 30 knot wind. They couldn't tow the plane. They took boat trips through the waves, battling ice, watching it freeze-dry in the 10 Below chill.
Finally, after days of waiting, the wind stopped long enough for them to tow the plane down the lake. They dried out the engine and ran it up.
The next day they loaded it on the trailer and waved good-bye. They'd been there for a week.
